Vocalists - Sungmin Ryeowook Kyuhyun Yesung
Sungmin’s strength is his expressiveness. He’s able to change the sound of his voice to fit the atmosphere of each song. You can hear this in the way he evokes a totally different atmosphere in Midnight Blues versus Too Many Beautiful Girls. His other strength is his consistent live performances. If you listen to the song Mamacita without background music, you’ll hear his voice clearly in the chorus. You’ll also be able to hear his outstanding vocal talent. Even in parts where it’s not obvious, you can feel how passionate and hard working Sungmin is. Sungmin’s charms are particularly apparent in the 7th album song “Islands”.
Ryeowook is a vocalist with a beautiful voice that is full of personality. His special characteristic is his clean and pretty voice, and the sorrowful sound of his high notes has the magical power to draw one’s attention. He’s also adept at expressing strong feelings, so he takes the role of singing the surprisingly powerful lyrics “You disgust me” in Don’t Don and “Just leave that piece of trash” in Super Junior. He’s also consistent on stage, and his voice resonates in the Mamacita performances. Moreover, as he has perfect pitch, his tone is always very exact.
While Kyuhyun is showing off his entertainment skills as an MC on various shows, including Radio Star, his day job is as Super Junior’s main vocal. His true charm can be found when he sings. His timbre is both smooth and heavy. He’s been praised as having a voice like honey. Kyuhyun is also very consistent in live performances, and his wide range means that he relatively takes on a lot of different parts. It’s also charming how he always shows his development, like Super Junior’s true magnae. He is receiving praise for his majestic high notes on this album. The part where he yells out powerfully “I need you” in Mamacita is impressive.
Yesung is a vocalist who’s able to express much emotion through his voice. Since he sings with a voice full of emotion, even the parts that aren’t high notes are not boring at all. His special characteristic is his high notes that are dignified and full of weight. He’s known for having the most dramatic high notes of all the members of the vocal line. His timbre is husky but smooth, so it doesn’t feel burdening and instead very comfortable. His solo song “It has to be you” for the KBS2 drama “Cinderella Unni”, released in 2010, achieved the highest ranking on the year’s list of Drama OST songs. He is currently serving as a civil service worker so he cannot appear in performances for Mamacita, but you can hear his voice in the 7th album track “Mid-season”.
